Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I want an air purifier for my home? Isn't the air inside my home protected from outside pollution?
Studies by Health Canada and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show that indoor pollutant levels inside the home may be much higher than outdoor levels. Indoor air pollution/contamination can cause or contribute to a variety of health problems, including asthma, allergies, nausea, and chronic respiratory diseases. The air inside your home can contain contaminants and particles that include dust, pollen, pet dander, mould, bacteria, virus, dioxin, formaldehyde and even radon decay by products.
How effective is the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier in improving the quality of the air in a room where these types of airborne particles may be present?
You can breathe easier knowing that the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier is 99.9% effective in removing airborne contaminant particles down to sizes as small as .01 microns in a single pass through the system. In addition, the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier also reduces household odours from cooking, smoke, diapers, and pets. The ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier is also very effective at removing bacteria, viruses and mold from the air that pass through the system.
The ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier can also reduce formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is an irritant and suspected carcinogen that is emitted from some wood products. Urea-formaldehyde glues and resins are used in some plywood and pressed board products, and they can slowly emit formaldehyde. The carbon filter contains two catalysts that destroy formaldehyde.
How large is a micron? Can I see it in the air?
A micron is one-millionth of a metre. The ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier removes particulates as small as .01 microns, which is about 1,800 times smaller than the sharp end of a pin. A grain of pollen is 30 microns, dust mites are 10 microns, pet dander is 90 microns, and smoke particles are 0.2 microns.
How can I be sure that the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier is really effective in removing most of these potential contaminant particles from the air inside a room?
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers has verified the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier's clean air delivery rate (CADR) through independent laboratory testing. CADR is widely accepted as a valid measure for comparing the performance of portable air cleaners and has been reviewed and referenced by the the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
What is the optimal room size for the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier?
Suggested use is for a room up to 390 square feet, which represents a room that's about 20 ft. x 20 ft.
Aren't there other air purifiers that are just as good?
Competitive air purifiers, without filters, may be 43% as effective as ATMOSPHERE in removing contaminants from the air. For example, it would take 15 of The Sharper Image® Ionic Breeze® units to clean the area of one ATMOSPHERE and with far less performance versus power efficiency.
Trademarks: The Sharper Image and Ionic Breeze (Sharper Image Corp., San Francisco, Calif.).
How many speeds does the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier have?
The ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier features five different speeds, plus an automatic mode that can sense particles in the air and switch the unit to the appropriate speed to keep the air in a room clean and fresh. The five speeds, and automatic mode, may be selected on the unit, or by the remote control. The five speeds include the Whisper mode, Low, Medium, High, and Turbo. The Turbo mode can clear the air in a 390-square-foot room in approximately 30 minutes.
What does the automatic mode do? How does it work?
The automatic mode on your ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier features IntelliSense technology exclusive to the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier. IntelliSense technology provides an automatic one-touch mode that monitors the air quality in a room even when you're not there. The IntelliSense monitoring system is highly sensitive and can detect contaminant particles such as smoke, dust and pollen. When sensing particles in the air, IntelliSense will increase the speed of the unit to remove particulates and pollutants as required. While it is suggested that you leave the unit on automatic most of the time, if the unit is in your bedroom, and shifts speeds at night, possibly disturbing your sleep, place the unit on Whisper mode or Low and return to the automatic setting in the morning. It is recommended that the unit not be placed by heating or cooling vents because of the likelihood of dust whenever the heating and air conditioning system turns on, thus leading to more frequent changes in unit speed. The unit is sensitive to changes in air quality, but that means it's doing its job.
What is the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of each speed?
The Clean Air Delivery Rate is the amount of air that can pass through, and be filtered through the unit in a minute. In the Whisper mode CADR is about 50 cubic feet per minute; Low speed is 100 cubic feet per minute; Medium speed is 150 cubic feet per minute; High speed is 200 cubic feet per minute; and in Turbo mode about 250 cubic feet per minute.
How energy efficient is the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier?
ATMOSPHERE has earned the U.S. government's ENERGY STAR® rating. ENERGY STAR was created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This agency sets the criteria to help shoppers for large and small home appliances identify the most energy-efficient products on the market. ENERGY STAR
qualified appliances exceed existing federal efficiency standards by anywhere from 13% to 110%. Customers can be assured that the appliance is a high-performance product that will lower its operating cost every month during the course of its lifetime.
Has the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier received any other certifications?
The ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier has been certified by ETL and AHAM.
What's the difference between the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier and the ionizer-type air cleaners I hear so much about?
The ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier features a three-stage filtration system featuring a pre-filter, a carbon filter, and a true HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, that remove particles and pollutants from the air that passes through them. Ionizer-type air cleaners, such as the Ionic Breeze, use electronically charged plates to "trap" particles. Testing by an independent laboratory found that ionizer-type air cleaners were ineffective in removing dust, smoke, and other particles from the air and in some cases also exposed users to potentially harmful ozone levels something that could be a concern to people with asthma, respiratory illnesses, or those with allergy concerns.
What should I know about the ozone produced by ionic-type air cleaners?
While ozone dissipates indoors, it can create other pollutants in the process. Research suggests that ozone reacts with the terpenes in lemon and pine-scented cleaning products and air fresheners, creating formaldehyde
a carcinogen and other irritants. Those byproducts can be absorbed by beds and carpets and can be released over an extended time frame. Research has also found that ozone reacts with terpenes to create additional ultra-fine particles, which are hard to filter and can go deep into lungs. Some ionizer-type air cleaners have been proven to produce ozone levels that could irritate people with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory illnesses.
How many filters are in the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier?
There are three filters featured in the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier's CLARUSTM Filtration System. There is a pre-filter, a HEPA filter, and a carbon filter.
What does the pre-filter in the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier do?
The pre-filter is a filter that removes larger particles from the air before they enter the rest of the filtering system. This pre-filter does not need to be replaced and can be cleaned periodically, depending on use.
What is a HEPA filter? What does it do?
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. In order to be rated a true HEPA filter, a filter needs to be 99.97% efficient in capturing particles that are 0.3 microns. The ATMOSPHERE Air Filter exceeds that standard. Competitive air cleaners, without true HEPA filters, don't come close to matching the ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier's air-purifying effectiveness. The HEPA filter can last from 3 months to 5 years, depending on the amount of particles in the air, the patterns of usesuch as speeds, and hours of operation.
What does the carbon filter in my ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier do?
The ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier also features an activated carbon filter that has a surface area equal to 226 soccer fields that's an area of just over 17 million square feet. It contains 1,900 grams of activated carbon. The expansive surface area of this carbon filter effectively reduces smoke, cooking, pet, and other household odours, leaving your home smelling clean and fresh. It will last 4 to 12 months depending on the patterns of use such as speeds, and hours of operation.
How do I maintain the filters in my ATMOSPHERE Air Purifier?
The best method for cleaning the pre-filter is to vacuum it. It may also be rinsed in water, but it should be completely dry when it is returned to the unit. The carbon filter and the HEPA filter need to be replaced periodically, depending on the amount of particles in the air, the patterns of use such as, speeds, and hours of operation.
How often will I need to replace the carbon filter and the HEPA filter?
Depending on use, the HEPA filter can last from 3 months to 5 years, while the carbon filter may last from 4 to 12 months.
How will I know when it's time to replace these filters? Do I need to keep track of hours of usage for each filter?
No. Both the HEPA filter and the carbon filter have electronic indicators that will alert you when it is time to change filters. When the indicators turn from green to amber, you'll know that you have at least two weeks of continuous usage before the indicator turns red, indicating that it is now time to change the filter. If you use the unit for only eight hours a day after the indicator turns amber, you'll have a longer period of time, maybe six weeks, before the filter actually needs to be replaced.
